You went to switch the laundry and found water on the floor. Or you found it later, when a wet streak had already gone under the baseboard.
Restore Pro SD matches you with a licensed independent restoration professional. We do not send a brand crew. The customer contracts with that professional.
Direct answers
Stop the water. Behind the machine there are usually two supply valves, hot and cold. Turn both clockwise until they stop. If they will not turn, shut the house main.
Power. If the machine is running, turn it off. Unplug it only if you can do that without standing in water. CDC guidance is not to switch power on or off while standing in water. If outlets or cords are in the water, leave them. Call an electrician if the panel itself is not reachable dry.
Then get the water off the floor if you can do it safely. EPA guidance is to fix plumbing leaks as soon as possible and dry items completely. Ask the independent professional what they want left in place until they arrive.
Who dries it? An independent restoration professional. Hidden wet pad, drywall, and subfloor do not announce themselves with a puddle. Sewage or other contaminated water is a different job.
How machines leak
Common failure points, without pretending we have a county-wide count:
- Supply hose. A slow drip or a sudden dump from the hot or cold line.
- Drain hose. Kinked, clogged, or popped out of the standpipe, so the machine overflows.
- Door gasket on a front-loader. Water out the front during a cycle.
- Inlet valve that sticks open and overfills the drum.
You do not need to name the failed part before you shut the valves.
Where the water tends to go
From the laundry room, water often travels under baseboards, through tile grout, and along the subfloor or slab. Adjacent hardwood or laminate can cup. Carpet pad holds water after the surface feels dry. See water-damaged carpet.
If the laundry is on a second floor, ask the independent professional to check the ceiling below, not just the laundry floor. Emergency water extraction is for standing water. Water damage restoration is extraction, drying, then repairs by whoever you hire.
Insurance is the policy, not this page
Photograph the cause and the damage. Call the carrier if you have a policy. What the contract covers is a policy question. This page does not decide coverage.
When to call
If water left the laundry room, the floor feels soft, or you cannot find the shutoff, get a moisture assessment.
